ROLEX TESTIMONEE BROOKS KOEPKA CLAIMS THIRD PGA CHAMPIONSHIP AND FIFTH MAJOR TITLE
Rochester, 24 May 2023 – Displaying supreme confidence and composure, Rolex Testimonee Brooks Koepka claimed his third PGA Championship title and his fifth Major of his career at the second of the four annual men’s Major championships, in Rochester, New York.
As the only Major championship contested by an all-professional field, the PGA Championship has perennially boasted the strongest field in golf. This year’s tournament, celebrating its 105th edition, was no different and Oak Hill Country Club once again provided a fitting venue, hosting the PGA Championship for a fourth time. Rolex and golf share the same mutual appreciation for tradition and unfaltering precision. For almost 60 years, the bond between Rolex and golf has evolved and continues through the Swiss watchmakers’ pivotal partnerships, which have further cemented Rolex’s place at the heart of the game.
The affiliation dates back to 1967 when Arnold Palmer became the brand’s first golf Testimonee, joined by close friends and fellow members of The Big Three, Nicklaus and Player. Since then, the association has grown exponentially and Rolex has forged close ties with elite and developing players, the main professional tours and governing bodies, as well as the finest events on the calendar.
Challenging in any conditions, the 2023 PGA Championship saw unseasonably cold temperatures and rain test the resilience and skills of the world’s best golfers. Following an impressive performance at April’s Masters Tournament, the resurgent Koepka illuminated the East Course and thrilled spectators with his unwavering accuracy and precision.
The American finished two shots clear on nine under to claim the iconic Wanamaker Trophy, awarded to the winner of the PGA Championship since 1916. It is the largest trophy in golf and named after Rodman Wanamaker, a Philadelphia native and American businessman who was a pivotal member in the formation of the PGA of America in 1916.
With this victory, Koepka becomes only the sixth player to win the PGA Championship on three of more occasions, having previously triumphed in 2018 and 2019. He joins fellow Testimonees Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus in this exclusive group, who have four and five titles respectively.
The 33-year-old also becomes only the 20th player in history to win at least five Major championship titles and this victory marked the third time in five years that Koepka has won a Major championship in the state of New York, having triumphed at the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills and the 2019 PGA Championship at Bethpage Black.
Speaking after the final round and reflecting on his Major championship titles, Brooks Koepka said: “This is probably one of the sweetest of my five Major titles because of all the hard work that went into this one. This one is definitely special. To be with those names [winning five Majors] is incredible. I'm not even sure I dreamed of it as a kid. I'm just so happy to do it in front of these New York fans.”
While glory belonged to Koepka, several other members of the Rolex golfing family delivered strong performances including Scottie Scheffler, who returns to World No. 1 after finishing in second place and scoring 65 to finish seven under par. Bryson DeChambeau finished joint fourth and Victor Perez finished in 12th place. Two-time PGA Championship winner Phil Mickelson drew on all his experience to reach another Major milestone. He became the third player in history to make 100 cuts in Major championships, joining fellow Testimonees Nicklaus (131) and Gary Player (102).
This deep-rooted support encompasses all four annual Majors in men’s golf that constitute the pinnacle of achievement, including the PGA Championship, at which Rolex has been Official Timekeeper and Official Partner since 2021 and where Rolex Testimonees have enjoyed regular success. The previous seven winners have been members of the Rolex family – namely, Justin Thomas (2017, 2022), Koepka (2018, 2019, 2023), Collin Morikawa (2020) and Mickelson (2021).
The attention of the golf world will soon turn to the U.S. Open, when the stunning Los Angeles Country Club will become the 53rd venue to stage the third men’s Major of the season. Matt Fitzpatrick will attempt to defend his title, after claiming his maiden Major title at The Country Club, Brookline, and will seek to become the third Rolex Testimonee of the year to win a Major championship, joining Koepka and Rahm.
