ROLEX WELCOMES BACK LAVER CUP AS OFFICIAL TIMEKEEPER AND FOUNDING PARTNER
Since its inception in 2017, the Laver Cup has been hosted in a different city each year, with the exception of 2020 when it was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The multi-purpose TD Garden will host this year’s tournament, with fans set to bring a palpable energy. Rolex Testimonee and 20-time Grand Slam® winner Roger Federer was instrumental in bringing the event to life and named the tournament after his hero, fellow Testimonee and tennis legend Rod Laver.
Rolex is intrinsically linked with tennis. In 1978, the brand became Official Timekeeper of The Championships, Wimbledon – the sport’s oldest, most revered tournament – and has since expanded its support significantly. Today it is the Official Timekeeper at all four Grand Slam tournaments and partners many of the sport’s greatest names, including Federer, Laver and Chris Evert.
GENERATION GAME
Rolex’s close relationship with the Laver Cup extends beyond the role as Founding Partner. Its Testimonees are synonymous with the competition, none more so than Laver. The Australian is a father figure of modern tennis, having inspired many players throughout a stellar career, during which he accomplished two calendar Grand Slam wins in 1962 as an amateur and again in 1969 as a professional.
The deep-rooted connection extends further, to Björn Borg, who has become closely tied with the tournament through his role as Team Europe’s captain. The Swede claimed 11 Grand Slam singles titles during his playing career and has carried that success into his captaincy, leading the Europeans to a clean sweep of victories at all three editions of the Laver Cup, in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
Ahead of the tournament, Borg said: “After the tournament was cancelled last year, it highlighted to the entire tennis world how much we’ve missed the team-based tournament. Rolex’s support of the Laver Cup has directly contributed to the success of the tournament, as has Roger’s unwavering passion.”
