Rolex Testimonee Iga Swiatek Claims Second Roland-Garros Title
Paris, 5 June 2022 – Rolex Testimonee Iga Świątek has won the Roland-Garros women’s singles championship, her masterful display over the course of the tournament securing a second Grand Slam® tennis title.
To be crowned champion of this physically and mentally demanding clay-court tournament requires skill, accuracy, and endurance, all of which the Pole showed in abundance throughout the fortnight of competition. These are qualities that also resonate strongly with Rolex, who once again returned as the Premium Partner and Official Timekeeper of Roland-Garros.
With her commanding display in the final, Świątek confirmed her place among the sport’s elite talents, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 over fellow Testimonee Cori Gauff. It was Świątek’s sixth straight title of 2022 and her 35th consecutive win, tying the record for the longest WTA winning streak in the 21st century. With the Roland-Garros crown, the World No. 1 joins an illustrious list of fellow Testimonees to have won in the French capital on multiple occasions, including Justine Henin, who lifted the trophy on four occasions, and Chris Evert, whose record of seven Roland-Garros women’s singles crowns still stands.
After her victory, Świątek, said:
“Winning this title two years ago was so special but to fight my way through the draw with the pressure of being the No. 1 seed means so much more. It feels like a confirmation of what I’m truly capable of and I’m still learning a lot about my game. I’m so incredibly proud of what I’ve achieved so far this year and look forward to seeing what the rest of the 2022 season holds.”
Rolex’s relationship with tennis dates back to 1978 when it formed a seminal partnership with the sport’s oldest and most revered tournament, The Championships, Wimbledon. Since then, Rolex has become Official Timekeeper at all four Grand Slam tournaments and built enduring relationships with the major organizations that administer the sport worldwide.
18-year-old Cori Gauff had a stellar tournament, reaching her first Grand Slam final without dropping a set. In the quarter-finals, she overcame fellow Testimonee and 2018 Roland-Garros finalist Sloane Stephens in a composed 7-5, 6-2 win. Over the two weeks, the American proved why she is among the most promising players in the game, displaying poise and precision beyond her years. With a combined age of 39, it was the youngest singles final at Roland-Garros since 1997.
