Rolex and cinema
ROLEX AND CINEMA
Rolex supports cinema, from the earliest stages of creation to the final crowning moment. Cinema is an adventure. A journey marked by challenges, each one to be overcome with passion and perseverance. Each film inspires the world. And while its watches play their own role on the wrists of legendary characters, Rolex partners with renowned institutions and celebrated figures. Together, they promote technical and artistic achievement, writing the grand history of filmmaking.
Rolex encourages the preservation and transmission of the cinematic arts, promotes excellence and celebrates progress by accompanying living legends as well as young talents through its Testimonees (Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, Jia Zhang-Ke and Leonardo DiCaprio), its partnership with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the institution, the awards and the Academy Museum in Los Angeles), Martin Scorsese’s The Film Foundation and the National Film and Television School in London.
HIGHLIGHT OF THE FILM SEASON
The Oscars® ceremony is a unique celebration of the excellence, inspiration and technical genius from which masterpieces are made. Since 2017, Rolex has been the Proud Sponsor of the Oscars® ceremony, held at the Dolby® Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. Telecast live in more than 200 territories worldwide, this unique event does more than celebrate cinema: year after year it helps shape the landscape of cinema worldwide.
CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE
The Oscars® ceremony represents infinitely more than recognition by one’s peers. It celebrates inspirationand emotion as well as the production process, the technical expertise and all else that goes into the making of a film. To borrow a favourite expression of Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf, it is an ode to “a work done handsomely”. Cinema is at once an art, a science and an industry, and the Oscars® ceremony shines a light on every one of its facets.
ROLEX AND THE OSCARS® GREENROOM
Rolex is the official host of the Greenroom, the antechamber of the Oscars®. Nominees and presenters gather inside this lounge before and after stepping onto the stage at the Oscars® ceremony, some returning with a coveted statuette.
Each year, Rolex develops a unique immersive experience and new decor for the Greenroom. In 2025, its theme is restoration of the natural world, taking its inspiration from Rewilding Chile and Rewilding Argentina, supported by Rolex’s Perpetual Planet Initiative. Both are offspring of Tompkins Conservation, an acclaimed non-profit that protects and restores biodiversity. The room depicts landscapes devoid of fences where native species are returning to the wilderness, and nature is restoring their habitat.
A CELEBRATION OF LONG-STANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO FILM
The Governors Awards mark the beginning of the Oscars® season. They honour the great names of cinema and are presented in recognition of a lifetime of remarkable achievements.
As such, the awards capture the spirit of the partnership between Rolex and cinema by rewarding individuals with long careers who have shown constant dedication to their artistic visions and have enduring bodies of work. They celebrate outstanding humanitarian efforts and recognize contributions to the art of filmmaking.
A HOME FOR CINEMA
Inaugurated in September 2021 in Los Angeles, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is a must-see for all those passionate about film.
It is the largest museum dedicated to filmmaking in the world. Located on Miracle Mile, in the heart of Los Angeles, the museum is immediately recognizable by its glass dome, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano who also fully renovated the 28,000-square-metre (300,000-square-feet) building. Inside are over 4,500 square metres (50,000 square feet) of gallery space for temporary and permanent exhibitions, two film theatres, including the 952-seat David Geffen Theater, Shirley Temple Education Studio
and the Debbie Reynolds Conservation Studio, as well as educational studios and areas for public events and ceremonies.
ROLEX: A FOUNDING SUPPORTER OF THE ACADEMY MUSEUM OF MOTION PICTURES
As a Founding Supporter of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, Rolex reaffirms its commitment to spotlighting talent, fostering excellence, safeguarding legacy and ensuring that knowledge and skills are passed on to future generations.
By shining a light on the past, present and future of film, the museum plunges visitors into the unique world of cinema, through original exhibitions, screenings, publications, educational programmes and exceptional collections.
The museum displays a vast selection of objects relating to film production and film technology, presenting the diverse, international and complex stories of movie makers and the works they create. Among the hundreds of objects on display are the Sole Surviving Full Scale Model of the shark from Jaws (made from the original mould) as well as items evoking cinema’s luminaries.
THE ROLEX GALLERY
On the museum’s third floor, the modular exhibitions inside the Rolex Gallery are designed as singular journeys through different moments in film history. Visitors are propelled into the work and world of directors from around the globe. Installations in the Stories of Cinema core exhibition reveal the many aspects of moviemaking – animation techniques, special effects, artists, history and social impact – through diverse voices that convey the magic of the big screen. The gallery Animation & Me immerses viewers in projections of clips, concept art, and behind-the-scenes footage that illustrate the art and process of animation. The exhibition is complemented by educational programming with special guests.
In Inventing Worlds and Characters, visitors learn how artists and technicians develop elements that go into creating a film, from the initial idea to the final production. Models, costumes and animation celluloids are among the many objects on display.
From 23 May 2025 to 25 October 2026, the Rolex Gallery will feature Barbie to Anna Karenina: The Cinematic Worlds of Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer, the first museum exhibition featuring the Oscar®-nominated collaborative team of production designer Sarah Greenwood and set decorator Katie Spencer. Greenwood and Spencer have worked together for more than 25 years, and this exhibition showcases the unique way in which they collaborate on the visual design of a film’s story, directorial vision and characters.
