ROLEX TESTIMONEE AND QUEEN OF CLAY IGA ŚWIĄTEK CLAIMS HER FOURTH ROLAND-GARROS TITLE
On Saturday 8 June, Rolex Testimonee and the women’s World No. 1 singles player, Iga Świątek, won her third consecutive Roland-Garros singles title, and her fourth overall. In perfect conditions on Court Philippe-Chatrier, Świątek showcased the familiar focus, skill and movement that characterizes her tennis to triumph in Paris once again and become a five-time Grand Slam® champion. En route to the final, the Polish phenomenon saved a match point in a thrilling second-round contest and from that moment never looked back. She dropped just 14 games in four matches, before winning the final with a scoreline of 6–2, 6–1 in 1 hour and 8 minutes. As Official Timekeeper of Roland-Garros since 2019, Rolex supports the perseverance and technical precision required to achieve success at Roland-Garros, championing the quest for perpetual excellence displayed by Świątek at the most prestigious clay-court tournament.
After the final, record seven-time Roland-Garros women’s singles champion, Chris Evert presented her fellow Rolex Testimonee Świątek with the Suzanne-Lenglen trophy, 50 years since the American claimed her first Grand Slam® title at the tournament. Reflecting on what it means to win her fourth Roland-Garros title and to hear Evert refer to her as the queen of clay, Świątek says:
Since winning the 2023 season-ending WTA Finals in Cancun and reclaiming the World No.1 ranking in November, Świątek has gone from strength to strength on court. The 23-year-old secured her first title of 2024 at Indian Wells, before enjoying an exemplary clay-court season. She won two more WTA 1000 tournaments in Madrid and Rome, arriving in Paris as the overwhelming favourite. Not one to shy away from the pressure, Świątek has embraced her position at the top of the women's game, winning 19 successive matches on clay and surpassing her longest winning streak on the surface from 2022.
Fellow members of the Rolex family of Testimonees who have also celebrated at Roland-Garros throughout the decades include: Rod Laver, Chris Evert, Björn Borg, Jim Courier, Justine Henin, Ana Ivanović, Roger Federer, Li Na and Garbiñe Muguruza. Lifting the iconic Suzanne-Lenglen trophy for the third consecutive year, Świątek joins Henin as one of only three players to have achieved this feat in the Open Era. She also becomes the first player in history to achieve four Roland-Garros titles before the age of 25, truly cementing her status as the current queen of clay.
