THE DUTCH MASTERS 2024: A RICH HISTORY AND MAGNIFICENT SPORT
Geneva, February 2024 – From 7-10 March 2024, the world’s leading horse and rider combinations will travel to the medieval city of ’s‑Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands for The Dutch Masters. First staged in 1967, the event’s combination of outstanding show jumping and exceptional dressage places it at the pinnacle of the international indoor equestrian circuit. Rolex is celebrating 10 years as Main Sponsor and Title Sponsor of the Grand Prix at The Dutch Masters, a relationship which began in 2014, marking the start of a perfect partnership where respect for tradition is matched by a commitment to constant improvement.
The Rolex Grand Prix at The Dutch Masters is the opening Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping Major of the calendar year. Launched in 2013, the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping rewards the rider who, consecutively, wins the Grand Prix at three of the four Majors, namely The Dutch Masters, the CHIO Aachen, the CSIO Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ Tournament and the CHI Geneva. It is considered to be the sport’s ultimate challenge and to date has only been achieved by one person – Rolex Testimonee Scott Brash, who completed the treble in 2015.
Recalling his magnificent win, Brash said: “Words can’t really describe what it felt like to win the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping. I remember experiencing such a mixture of emotions, we had finally achieved our target. In the months leading up to Spruce Meadows, we would wake up with the target of winning the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping, so to then actually achieve that goal, I had so many emotions; delight, relief, happiness, even sadness in a strange way as it was a goal our whole team had been utterly focused on, and suddenly that chapter was done! It was absolutely incredible, and a single moment that I will remember for the rest of my life.”
Rolex has been a committed partner of equestrianism for almost 70 years, continuing to build on an equestrian tradition that began in 1957 through an alliance with the British show jumper Pat Smythe. A pioneer in equestrianism, Smythe became the sport’s first Testimonee. The brand’s relationship with equestrianism is part of a long-term strategy to help inspire future generations and instill in them a competitive spirit, the hunger for a challenge and the continuous pursuit of excellence.
The Swiss watchmaker has a rich heritage of contributing to excellence in equestrianism, encouraging modernization while respecting the elegance of this prestigious sport. The Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping is the culmination of this ideal and the brand’s enduring support for the sport. It is currently celebrating its 10-year anniversary, with commemorations launched at the CHIO Aachen in June 2023, exactly 10 years after the first Major took place at the show, and culminating at The Dutch Masters in March 2024.
The pinnacle class at this prestigious show is the Rolex Grand Prix, which will take place on Sunday 10 March. Following his victory in the Rolex Grand Prix at the CHI Geneva in December, German rider Richard Vogel, will travel to ’s‑Hertogenbosch as the live contender of the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping. In addition to supporting world-class events and initiatives, Rolex partners the sport’s most outstanding athletes whose expertise and accuracy mirror that of the brand in its watchmaking endeavors. Rolex Testimonees to have won the Rolex Grand Prix at The Dutch Masters include Daniel Deusser (2007, 2015, 2022) and Kevin Staut (2010, 2014).
Deusser, who will be looking for a history-making fourth victory in ’s‑Hertogenbosch, reflected on what it takes to win the Rolex Grand Prix at The Dutch Masters: “It is the instinct of the horse and rider that makes you win a competition like that, especially in the indoor arena where the turns are so important. You need a very, very good horse and you need to be a bit lucky, for example with the position that you have in the jump-off, but then you have to go with your feeling in the moment and what you think you can risk.”
Looking ahead to his chances for the 2024 show, Deusser said: “I have two very good horses, who will come back stronger after a bit of a break – they will have more experience and more strength. Winning the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping Majors is my main goal this year, starting at The Dutch Masters.”
